MINNESOTA BOXING TRAINER AND GYM OWNER JIM GLANCEY PASSES AWAY.
I have just learned from former Ring Magazine correspondent George Blair that our mutual friend Jim Glancey passed away on August 7th. This was very sad news indeed. Jim was 83 years old. He has been a fixture in the St.Paul area for many years operating his own gym for over a decade (1992-2002). For many years he published his own bi-weekly boxing newsletter,"Winners Never Quit". Mr. Glancey was kind enough to post several of my articles in his newsletter. He also knew I was a big Twins fan back from the Tony Oliva/Harmon Killebrew days. Every now and then he would send me a Twins hat or a baseball card just on a whim. He recently sent me $50 cash to repair my computer and a stern note not to return the money. Just the kind of man he was. I never met Jim in person but we talked on the phone a few times. I always wanted to take a weekend and go up to St.Paul to meet and talk to Jim and Mr.Blair. I know I would have learned a lot.
When I report for work tomorrow morning I will wear my Twins hat in honor of Mr. Glancey. Rest in peace Jim. Jim Amato

Banks defends NABF heavyweight title vs. Gavern in “Fists Of Steel” co-feature Vitali Klitschko-Albert Sosnowski WBC heavyweight title fight headlines May 29 PPV
HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 19, 2010) – NABF heavyweight champion Johnathon Banks makes his first title defense May 29 on the “Fists Of Steel” pay-per-view event, featuring WBC heavyweight title holder Vitali “Dr. Ironfist” Klitschko against challenger Albert “The Dragon” Sosnowski, live from the 61,000-seat Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Detroit punisher Banks (24-1, 17 KOs), ranked # 7 in the world by the WBC and #9 by the IBF, takes on veteran Jason “The Sensation” Gavern, rated in the top 15 of the WBC, in the 12-round co-feature.
“Fists Of Steel,” presented by K2 Promotions and Klitschko Management Group, is being distributed in North America by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 3 PM/ET – 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, Avail-TVN and DISH Network in the United States, as well as Bell TV, Shaw PPV and Viewer’s Choice in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95.
A 3-time U.S. national amateur champion, Banks captured the NABF crown last March in what was voted NABF Fight of the Year, stopping Travis Walker (34-3-1) with a dramatic KO in the sixth round of their title fight in Germany. The former NABO and IBO cruiserweight champion, Banks has been the chief sparring partner for the Klitschko brothers for the last three years. He has now emerged in his own right as one of the top heavyweights in the world.
“We’re excited by the progress Johnathon has made in the heavyweight division,” said Tom Loeffer, managing director of K2 Promotions. “He was struggling to make weight as a cruiserweight when he lost to Adamek, but now he is much stronger as a heavyweight. By winning the NABF title the way he did, Johnathon has established himself as one of the top heavyweights in the world today.”
Gavern also won a title in his lasts fight, when he captured the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation title with a win over Manuel Quezada. In what turned out to be the biggest win of his career, Gavern beat Quesada (29-4), rated #7 at the time by the WBC, by a 10-round decision to capture the title. The battle-tested Floridian has also defeated Cisse Salif, Jermell Barnes and Raphael Butler during his 7-year career.
In the 12-round main event, Sosnowski will attempt to upset Klitschko to become the first Polish heavyweight champion of the world against 3-time heavyweight champion Klitschko (39-2, 37 KOs), who returned to the ring after a 4-year retirement to regained his WBC championship belt by stopping Samuel Peter in 2008. He has since defended his title three times by stopping Juan Carlos Gomez and Chris Arreola, and winning every round against Kevin Johnson last December.
Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KOs), now fighting out of the United Kingdom, became the European champion by capturing the European Boxing Union heavyweight title in his last fight. He won a 12-round decision last December against Italian Olympian, Paolo Vidoz.

BRIGGS BY ONE-PUNCH KO - Ron Ross Hollywood, FL April 14, 2010
How do you describe a fight like last night’s main even at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fl Write big, very big!
The bell rings for Round One. Shannon Briggs moves from his corner to meet his 270 ¼ pound Cuban opponent Rafael Pedro. Briggs throws his right hand. Pedro falls to the canvas. Referee Sam Burgos counts to ‘Ten!’ and it’s all over in 28 seconds of the first round.
That’s it. The fight – the whole fight and nothing but the fight!
The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s heavyweight development program, The Heavyweight Factory, with a cast of no-name young heavyweights, many from the ranks of local college and high school football fields, went into its second installment last night. At evening’s end, all the young neophytes were invited to observe how it’s done by watching the ten round main event. Instructor – 263 pound Prof. Shannon Briggs, who, at the age of 38, believes in getting right to the point! Now it’s up to his students to follow the lesson plan.
DR ALLAN FIELDS’ BUSY NIGHT
DR ALLAN FIELDS’ BUSY NIGHT - Ron RossHollywood, FL April 14, 2010
The feature attraction on last night’s boxing program at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was Shannon Briggs. That’s what the program stated. And Shannon came through with one of the most spectacular knockouts in this arena’s history. But no one will dispute the fact that the true star of the evening was another man who wore gloves – surgical gloves, that is – and his role was to alleviate pain and suffering, not inflict same.
Dr. Allan Fields is a familiar face at all south Florida fight cards. A ring physician with the Florida State Boxing Commission, Dr. Fields is the consummate professional. He does his job with little fanfare, most of his work behind the scenes, ministering to the wounded, checking the physical condition of fighters, and determining whether a fighter can or cannot continue. He’s there, you can see him if you look, but he is basically invisible. Last night the spotlight was on Dr. Allan Fields, superstar performing heroic deeds. Just prio r to the evening’s opening bout, a fan in the upper stands fell, hit his head on a concrete step, losing consciousness and stopped breathing. A frenzied call came from the balcony, “We need a doctor up here!” Dr. Fields raced up to the balcony level, and working feverishly, resuscitated and restored life to the injured person, who, at last report was in stable condition in the hospital. But his regular evening’s work was just to begin, caring for a flock of young fighter.
It was during the evening’s 5th bout that a young heavyweight making his professional debut, former University of Memphis linebacker Carlton Baker, swinging wildly but effectively enough to be winning, suddenly dropped to the canvas in agony, having thrown out his shoulder. It could have been my imagination but it seemed as though trumpets were blaring as, there, jumping into the ring was ---- Dr. Allan Fields, who unceremoniously simply popped Baker’s shoulder back in place. However, his mission was not yet complete. He did such a good job of restoring Baker’s shoulder to normalcy that he now had to restrain him from continuing to fight. As Baker weighed slightly over 225 pounds of mostly solid muscle, this was no easy task. The Fight Doctor once again prevailed. All in a night’s work? Not usually. It doesn’t happen too often, but last night the feature attraction was the Ring Doctor- Allan Fields.

JOELO TORRES TAKES CENTER STAGE AT THE NEARLY SOLD OUT BB KING BLUES CLUB AND GRILL ON MARCH 31 AS DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT’S BROADWAY BOXING RETURNS TO TIMES SQUARE (New York, NY – March 24, 2010) When Joelo Torres steps in the ring on March 31, as part of DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing, he will be following the lead of the some of the greatest Puerto Rican pugilists to come before him. He will be performing in New York City, home to one of the nation’s largest Puerto Rican populations. Torres (11-0-1, 7 KOs) headlines Broadway Boxing from the BB King Blues Club & Grill in the heart of Times Square, battling Leo Martinez (14-12, 6 KOs) of Chicago. Also featured on the show are fellow unbeaten prospects: heavyweight Tor Hamer (10-0, 8 KOs), light welterweight Gabriel Bracero (8-0), middleweight Denis Douglin (7-0, 3 KOs), and middleweight Aleem Whitfield (2-0, 2 KOs). Less than 50 tickets remain for what promises to be a memorable night of action. From Wilfredo Benitez to Wilfredo Gomez, Jose Torres to Felix Trinidad, the greatest Puerto Rican boxers have all plied their trade in New York City, fighting in front of raucous crowds that rival any on their home island. It’s not a fact lost on Joelo Torres, who hopes to build a similar fan base fighting regularly in the city that never sleeps. “I’m very happy, excited, and motivated to be on this stage,” said Torres. “I am ready to give a great spectacle in my second home, where millions of my fellow countrymen live. New York City is the capitol of the world!” Across the ring from Torres will be Martinez, who lacks a gaudy record, but has plenty of fighting spirit. Martinez holds a win over former world champion Eric Aiken, and was impressive in his last fight: a four round decision win over Oscar De La Cruz in April, 2009. Torres, however, has been on a roll since suffering the lone setback of his career, when he fought to a draw with veteran contender Chris Fernandez in 2008. In his two bouts since, Torres has fought a total of two rounds, including a first round stoppage over the typically durable Washington Hago in front of a vocal BB King crowd in his last outing. Against Martinez he plans to ride the hot streak, even if the knockout doesn’t come as quickly as his fans have been getting accustomed to. “I’ve worked very hard to make sure we are prepared for anything that [Martinez] brings,” said Torres. “I will be looking for the KO but I am prepared to go 8 solid rounds.” Promoter Lou DiBella is confident in his charge, and confident that if Torres continues to impress in front of the New York City fight fans, it won’t be long until he becomes the next Puerto Rican superstar to firmly establish himself in the Big Apple. “Joelo has not only the look, but the skills and pedigree to back it up,” said DiBella. “Each time he fights, more and more fans show up to cheer him on. It seems like only a matter of time before he becomes the next great attraction of Puerto Rican descent in our sport.” Torres understands the heavy expectations, but embraces them with open arms. While he remains focused on his fight next Wednesday, he also keeps an eye toward the future, and what lies ahead as he continues to pile up the wins. “I will show my fans,” said Torres. “That the Island of Puerto Rico will soon have another world champion and his name is Joelo Torres!” Tickets to Broadway Boxing are available by calling DiBella Entertainment at 212-947-2577. Tickets are $55 for General Admission, $75 for Floor Seats, and $125 for VIP Ringside tickets. However, only floor seats remain for this nearly sold out event. Additional information can be found by visiting DiBella Entertainment on the web at www.dbe1.com DBE
