LOOKING FOR COPY

My father was a professional boxer between 1932 and 1939. He fought matches in Galveston, Fort Worth and Corpus Christi, Texas, New York, and in Milwaukee. His boxing name was "Young Maxie Rosenbloom" his real  name was Ely Uretsky. I am trying to search newspaper databases throughout the US to find articles and hopefully photos of some of his matches. Need help and advice. I guess I should mention that there was a heavy weight boxer by the name of Maxie Rosenbloom. You will find a lot of hits on him he was a world champion. My dad however was younger and fought as a welter weight. He used the boxing name YOUNG Maxie Rosenbloom, or Maxie Rosen. His given name again was Ely Uretsky. I am looking for any 1930’s Ring magazines listing any of his fights. Usually he is listed in the small print and not in any major articles. If anyone has any articles or magazines, I would like to purchase.

Thanks,

Tom Uretsky

BAD JOURNALISM

I noticed while reading your article "around the ring" for a fight that happened almost a year ago between Danny McDermott and Floriano Pagliara. It struck me how bad your journalists are. It stated that McDermott was 8-3 and Pagliara 9-2 before their bout-McDermott is 7-1 and Pagliara was 9-1. How do you make that big of a mistake? You should retract the article or correct it. Its False information you are supplieing to the public.

JLII

I browsed for the article. I cannot find it. I can only guess that possibly the bout sheet that night was the records the writer followed. We sometimes use the printed bout sheets either provided by the Commission and/or Promoter and they sometimes contain errors. Also, don't forget some guys records are listed incorrectly to show the opponent a loss or two so they take the bout and think they are not boxing with an undefeated boxer. The gentleman is correct in that now on BoxRec (where I go for almost all of my info, stats, data) McDermott was 7-1-1 prior to the bout with Pagliara. Pagliara was 9-2 before the bout with McDermott. Sometimes we make errors but it is not intentional and we appreciate attentive fans who bring to our attention any flaws and mistakes. We are glad he brought it to our attention.

Thanks, Bobby Breen, BTW I cannot look up the article to confirm the inquirer's info but I take him on his word.

JERSEY CITY DYNAMO

Hi,

I was wondering if you had or know where I could find ANY information on a boxer named Pasquale Russo.  He boxed in Jersey City in probably the 1940's - 50's, and I believe his nickname was Milky.  I've spent countless hours on the computer trying to find any information on him and have not been able to find a thing!  The next step is a road trip to Jersey City to see if I can find anything at the gyms and boxing clubs there!

Any insight you may have would be appreciated more than you know!

Thank you,
Julie

MAX BERG, LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT

Hi, I was wondering if you had any information on a light heavyweight from the 1930’s named Max Berg. He is my grandfather who has long since passed on . What I did learn about him from my grandmother about his career is:

He fought on an under-card at Madison Square Garden in the 30’s

He was 52-0

He sparred with Jack Dempsey . . .

His promoter was a Thomas Cummings (I read the original contract this weekend) and was dated in 1934.

Unfortunately that’s it. I was baffled that I was unable to find even a mention of his name anywhere on the internet being 52-0 and also fighting at the Garden. At the time he was living in New Jersey or Connecticut. I do know that he was on an under-card at the Garden because we have a newspaper clipping of it but its just his picture- no date.  Thanks for any help. If you find anything, would you please email it to darrenengelke@comcast.net. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Darren Engelke, grandson of Max Berg
